Mausoleİon’un Askerlerİ / Soldiers of the Mausoleıum

Mausoleion’un Askerleri Doğu Çankaya’nın yaşadığı yer olan Bodrum’u ve Bodrum’un ev sahipliği yaptığı bir dünya kültür mirası olan Mausoleion’u onurlandırmak için ürettiği heykel serisidir. Gövdeleri sedir ağacından yontulmuş, üst bölümleri sanatçının üretim pratiğinde sıklıkla kullandığı farklı malzemelerle forma sokulmuş yedi heykel Mausoleion’un Askerleri serisini oluşturur.

Antik Halikarnassus’ta bulunan ve dünyanın yedi harikasından biri olan Mausoleion büyük bir depremle yerle bir olduktan sonra Bodrum’a gelen Saint John şövalyeleri Bodrum kalesini inşa ederlerken Mausoleion’un taşlarından bir bölümünü kaleye getirmişler ve kalenin inşasında kullanmışlardır. Bu yüzden Bodrum kalesi Mausoleion’dan eser taşır.

Kendi kişisel tarihinde ise Çankaya 2015’te Bodrum’un en eski yerleşim bölgelerinden birinde, Mausoleion’a yürüme mesafesinde bulunan, neredeyse yıkılmak üzere olan bir taş ev satın almıştır. İnşa tarihi tam olarak bilinmese de iki yüzyıla dayanan bir geçmişi olduğundan söz edilen taş evin restorasyonu sırasında, evden “çürümüş” diye çıkartılan sedir ağacından parçaları saklamış ve bunları heykellerin gövdelerinde kullanmıştır. Çankaya o tarihten bu yana bu taş ev ve bahçesinde oluşturduğu atölyesinde çalışmaktadır.

Heykellerin sembolizmi şu şekilde açıklanabilir:

Mausoleion’un Askerleri isimleri anılmayan ya da bilinmeyen ve işlerini liyakatle yapan herkestir. Bulundukları yere sadıktırlar, hizmet eder ve korurlar. Kamusal alanda ilk sergilendikleri yer olan Bodrum Kalesi’nin önünde nöbet tutarlarken, tarihleri iç içe geçmiş üç şeyi: Bugünün Bodrum’unda sanat üretilen bir ev/atölyeyi, bir kenti koruyan simgesel bir Kaleyi ve geçmiş bir uygarlığın tarihini temsil eden bir anıt yapıyı mütevazi duruşlarında buluştururlar.

Eser, 16-22 Ekim 2022 tarihleri arasında gerçekleşen 34. The Bodrum Cup süresince Bodrum Art Melek grubunun organize ettiği sanat etkinlikleri kapsamında Bodrum Kalesi Kuzey hendeğinde sergilenmektedir. Çankaya bu sürecin eser için bir başlangıç olmasını ve Bodrum’un kültür tarihine saygı ve sanatsal bir yanıt olarak ürettiği heykellerin kamusal alandaki yolculuğunun sürmesini ummaktadır.

Soldiers of the Mausoleium is a series of sculptures that Doğu Çankaya created to honor Bodrum, the city he lives in and The Mausoleium at Halicarnassus, a world cultural heritage. Seven sculptures, whose bodies are carved from cedar wood and whose upper parts are formed with different materials that the artist frequently uses in his art practice, form the Soldiers of the Mausoleium series. The knights of Saint John, who came to Bodrum after the Mausoleium in Ancient Halicarnassus was destroyed by a great earthquake, brought some of the stones of the Mausoleum to the castle while they were building the Bodrum castle and used it in the construction of the castle. That's why Bodrum castle bears pieces from the Mausoleium.

In his personal history, Çankaya bought a stone house in one of the oldest residential areas of Bodrum, within walking distance of the Mausoleium, in 2015. Although the exact construction date is not known but it is estimated to be around two centuries old. During the restoration, Çankaya kept pieces of cedar wood that were taken out of the house as "damaged" and used them on the bodies of the statues. Since then Çankaya works in the studio he made in the garden of the stone house.

The symbolism of the statues can be explained as follows:

The Soldiers of Mausoleium are all those whose names are not mentioned or known and who do their jobs with merit. They are loyal to their landscapes, love, serve and protect it. While keeping watch in front of Bodrum Castle, they bring together with a humble stance three things whose history is intertwined: A home/studio that produces art in today's Bodrum, a historic castle symbolically protecting a town, and a monumental structure representing the history of a past civilization.

The work is exhibited in the North ditch of Bodrum Castle as part of the art activities organized by the Bodrum Art Melek group during the 34th The Bodrum Cup, which took place between 16-22 October 2022. Çankaya hopes that this process will be a start for the work and that the sculptures he created as respect and artistic response to Bodrum's cultural history will continue their journey in the public space.
